Hyung-Gu Lynn is the AECL/KEPCO Chair in Korean Research at the Institute of Asian Research (IAR), University of British Columbia. He is also the Editor for the journal Pacific Affairs, an independent, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal that has been published continuously since 1928. Dr. Lynn’s research focuses mainly on a variety of issues focused on Korea (both South and North) and Japan, ranging in chronological coverage from the late-19th century to the present, with particular interests in Korea’s colonial period and contemporary issues. In terms of subject matter, his publications and research interests include colonial period state-society relations, colonial period and contemporary migration, international relations, popular culture, media and politics, business history, globalization, political economy, epistemology, clothing, photography, postcards, and plastic surgery.

He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and his MA and BA from the University of British Columbia. Prior to joining the IAR in 2002, Dr. Lynn held positions at Hitotsubashi University (Institute of Economics) and Hanyang University (Literature). More recently, Dr. Lynn has been a visiting professor at Kyushu University and Seoul National University.

His teaching at the IAR in the MA in Asia Pacific Policy Studies (MAPPS) program has covered globalization and culture, gender and development, economic and social change, postcolonial theory, and migration. He is the director of the Gender Stream in the MAPPS program.
