Don Baker first became interested in Korea as a US Peace Corps volunteer in the city of Kwangju from 1971 to 1974. After receiving a doctorate in Korean History from the University of Washington, he moved to UBC in 1987 to establish the Korean Studies program in the Department of Asian Studies. He has also taught at the University of California at Berkley, at UCLA, at the University of Washington, and at the University of Maryland program in Okinawa, Japan.From 2001 to 2007 he served as director of the UBC Centre for Korean Research.
